Payment Customization

Overview

The Payment Customization feature allows you to control which payment methods are available to your customers when they purchase gift cards. This helps ensure smooth transactions and prevents payment-related issues that might occur with certain payment methods.

Key Features

  • Smart Payment Rules: Set up automatic rules that disable gift card payments when specific conditions are met
  • eGift Card Restrictions: Choose which payment methods to disable when customers buy digital gift cards
  • Physical Gift Card Restrictions: Control payment options for physical gift card purchases
  • Automatic Application: Rules apply automatically during checkout without manual intervention

Payment Method Restrictions

This feature lets you control which payment methods customers can use when purchasing different types of gift cards.

For eGift Cards

eGift cards are digital gift cards delivered via email.

Setting Up eGift Card Restrictions

  1. Click the For eGift Cards tab
  2. Review the list of available payment methods
  3. Check the boxes next to payment methods you want to restrict (hide from customers)
  4. Unchecked methods will remain available for eGift card purchases

Common eGift Card Restrictions

Many merchants restrict these payment methods for eGift cards:

  • Buy now, pay later services (Klarna, Afterpay)
  • Store credit or Gift cards (to prevent gift card loops)
  • Bank transfers (due to processing delays)

For Physical Gift Cards

Physical gift cards are printed cards that are shipped to customers.

Setting Up Physical Gift Card Restrictions

  1. Click the For Physical Gift Cards tab
  2. Select payment methods to restrict using the same process as eGift cards
  3. Consider shipping and handling requirements when making selections

Common Physical Gift Card Restrictions

Physical gift cards typically have fewer restrictions since they're tangible products:

  • Digital wallets might be restricted in some regions
  • Cryptocurrency payments (if applicable)

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

Problem: Payment customization options are grayed out
Solution: Check that you have the required permissions. Look for the yellow warning banner and update permissions if needed.
Problem: Rules aren't working during checkout

Solution:

  • Verify rules are saved properly
  • Check that conditions are set correctly
  • Ensure you have the latest app permissions
Problem: Can't see all payment methods
Solution: Payment methods must be enabled in your Shopify settings first. Go to Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin.

If you continue experiencing issues:

  1. Check your Shopify payment settings
  2. Contact Gift Card Hero support with:
  • Screenshots of your current settings

Best Practices

Setting Up Rules

  • Start Simple: Begin with one or two basic rules and add complexity as needed
  • Test Thoroughly: Use Shopify's preview mode to test your checkout experience
  • Consider Customer Experience: Avoid restricting too many payment methods, which might frustrate customers

Payment Method Selection

  • Review Regularly: Payment preferences change over time - review your restrictions quarterly
  • Monitor Analytics: Track which payment methods customers prefer and adjust accordingly
  • Consider Geography: Different regions have different preferred payment methods

Maintenance

  • Document Changes: Keep notes about why specific restrictions were implemented
  • Monitor Performance: Check if payment restrictions affect your conversion rates
  • Stay Updated: New payment methods may become available and need configuration
